Blaspherian: Infernal warriors of death

03/05/11  ||  Habakuk

One word band names are the best. Whatever a Blaspherian is, at least it didn’t kill the prom queen. These four Texans don’t care about such matter.

What they do care about is playing filthy, almost sludgy death metal à la Incantation. However with riffs a lot more blunt, a lot more straightforward than the latter’s twisted meandering processions we all know so well, and applying a decidedly different type of scraping edge instead of the pure low-end brought forward from New York. The production is still rather shitty, but that adds to the charm with these bands anyway. I mean shitty as in lo-fi here. And since there still is a bit of punch when turned up loud enough, you won’t be seeing me running to the local death metal office to file a complaint. It’s is a label-sent after all – The fact alone that I didn’t mention this in sentence one in [despise]-tags should tell you these guys aren’t completely off the mark with “Infernal Warriors of DESS!!”, although that title might imply otherwise.

So, what is it that’s rumbling out of my speakers at this late hour? Think a singer that goes as low and guttural as possible with still being somewhat comprehensible – so I’m only half guessing that Metal-Archives’ description of the lyrical themes (“Satanism, Evil, Darkness”) is pretty accurate. Think additionally: One guitarist churning out mean riffs by the dozen, and a more than solid pounding from the rough direction of the drumkit to top it off. There should be a bass somewhere, but you won’t hear it, so don’t think that! Yep, ever noticed that your brain doesn’t let you think in not-schemes? Hence when I say do not think of a pretty good lo-fi death metal album, your head should automatically give you quite a good impression of what these guys are presenting here. The cover art is probably also not referencing Dawn of Possession, so don’t get any ideas here.

Numerous possibilities for stylistic funnies aside – if you’re looking for a good old death metal beating that travels down Evil Road rather than Gore Lane and take a liking in NYDM greats like Immolation, Incantation and (this would definitely be telling) also less-greats like Morpheus Descends, this might be for you. Dare I say, “Goatcheck it out”?
